The Mail Online have an excellant, recent, piece about Bob Dylan’s Hibbing hometown.
“Where I am standing is not so much the middle of nowhere as a distant satellite of nowhere. I am in Hibbing, northern Minnesota, where Bob Hocking, who runs a local bar and restaurant, has driven me to the very edge of town, to the point where it fizzles out into dirt roads and emptiness. This, says Bob, is a place of authentic rock ‘n’ roll history.
We are looking at the slightly ramshackle wooden homestead where a young Bob Dylan wooed his high school sweetheart – the magnificently named Echo Helstrom.
It is still the Helstrom family home, although Echo is long gone. But the swing in the garden, where the two swapped teenage dreams, is still there.
Occasionally, a Dylan pilgrim will make it to Hibbing and have a crafty swing, hoping perhaps to absorb some of the magic.”
